The element
Indium is element 49, symbol In. It is soft enough to mark with a fingernail and, when a bar is bent, it lets out a high-pitched “cry”. It was discovered in 1863 from the bright indigo line in its spectrum, which gave it its name.
Today almost every touchscreen depends on it: indium tin oxide is the transparent conductor that lets glass carry an electric current.
