The element
Iridium is element 77, symbol Ir. It is one of the densest elements and the most corrosion-resistant metal known, unaffected even by most hot acids. Its name comes from Iris, the Greek goddess of the rainbow, after the many colours of its salts.
A thin layer of iridium in rocks around the world, laid down 66 million years ago, is the evidence that a giant asteroid struck the Earth at the end of the age of the dinosaurs.
